On Screen: “His & Hers”

His & Hers

Looking for a twisty thriller to binge watch?

Try “His & Hers,” based on the novel by Alice Feeny. Adapted for television by William Oldroyd, this murder mystery takes a deep dive into the dilemma of ‘two sides to every story.’

Having ‘disappeared’ after the tragic death of her child, grieving former TV news anchor Anna Harper (Tessa Thompson) returns to Atlanta to try to reclaim her prestigious job by reporting a brutal murder that took place in Dahlonega, her small Georgia hometown.

Deep in the woods in the midst of a rainstorm, the lifeless body of a local woman — Rachel (Jamie Tisdale) — is discovered sprawled on the hood of her red sports car. She’s been stabbed numerous times and her cell phone is missing.

Problem is: the lead investigator is Detective Jack Harper (Jon Bernthal), Anna’s estranged husband, and he’s obviously suspicious about her involvement in the grim case since Anna grew up here and her aging mother, Alice (Crystal Fox), lives nearby.

Actually, both Anna and Jack have ties to the victim and there are rattling skeletons in their respective closets, particularly when flashbacks show what happened to young Anna when she encountered a clique of ‘mean girls’ in school.

But that ominous revelation comes later …

Eager to scoop other reporters, vindictive Anna rushes to the crime scene, commandeering hotshot cameraman Richard Jones (Pablo Schreiber), who happens to be married to sexy Lexy Jones (Rebecca Rittenhouse), the ambitious anchorwoman who replaced Anna on the evening news.

Eyeing it all from the sidelines is Jack’s astute assistant Priya Patel (Sunita Mani), who compiles bits and bots of evidence that don’t seem to add up properly.

On the Granger Gauge of 1 to 10, “His & Hers” is an intriguing if somewhat implausible 6 — with all six addictive episodes streaming on Netflix.
