Arnold Jerome Benton, 93
It is with deep love and sadness that we share the passing of our beloved father, Dr. Arnold Jerome Benton. He died peacefully in his sleep at home on Wednesday, March 25, at age 93 after a long illness. Johna, his best friend and wife of 50 years, was by his side.
Born in Brooklyn in 1932, Arnold was a man of extraordinary intellect; soft-spoken, with a quiet wit. He was an accomplished psychiatrist, Army veteran, and ceramics artist, and lived with Johna on Fanton Hill Road in Weston, Connecticut, since 1975.
Arnold is survived by his wife, Johna Benton; his son, Daniel Benton, and daughter-in-law, Stephanie March; his daughters, Janet Benton, Alison Benton, and Diana Benton Schechter, and son-in-law, Jason Schechter; and niece, Randoll Akselrad (and her husband Michael). Arnold’s daughter, Lisa, predeceased him in 1963.
He is also survived by eight beloved grandchildren, Norah and Ava Benton Schechter; Dariel Benton-Updike; Alexander (and his wife, Alisa Zhou); Jeffrey, Michael, Katerina, and Nathaniel Benton; and his great-grandson, Wesley Lin Benton, whom Arnold was fortunate to meet before he passed.
Donations in Arnold’s name can be directed to HIAS (www.HIAS.org), an immigrant advocacy organization co-founded by Arnold’s paternal grandparents.
