Learn Hands-Only CPR from EMS

Weston EMS offers two classes in December where you can learn how to perform hands-only CPR, a technique that does not involve mouth-to-mouth resuscitation but may very well save a life.

You can sign up here for one of these sessions:

Classes, offered for free, take place at EMS headquarters in Firehouse No. 1 at 52 Norfield Road.

The program also covers how to recognize medical emergencies and how to use a defibrillator. Participants practice hands-only CPR on Smart Manikins.

EMS reports that 70 percent of out-of-hospital cardiac arrests happen at home. Only 10 percent survive, but immediate CPR can greatly improve those odds.

Hands-only CPR involves applying continuous chest compressions on someone who has suddenly collapsed. It is recommended for people who are not CPR-trained or are unsure about how to perform rescue breathing. It has been shown to be an effective way to maintain blood flow during a cardiac arrest and can double or triple a person’s chance of survival.
