Longtime Weston resident David Osborn, a 103-year-old World War II veteran, was honored with a Quilt of Valor on Wednesday, following the swearing-in ceremony for elected officials at Town Hall.

“This is a special recognition that happens for very few veterans,” said First Selectwoman Samantha Nestor, who introduced Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz.

Over the past 22 years, volunteers with Quilts of Valor, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, have made quilts by hand or machine and awarded them to service members and veterans who have been involved in war.

Ms. Bysiewicz spoke about her work to recognize Connecticut veterans of World War II, “to meet these treasures that we have in the state.” She said the gathering to swear in officials, coming the day after Veterans Day, was a perfect time to honor Mr. Osborn with a Quilt of Valor.

Mr. Osborn spoke briefly, saying, “I look at you people and what you represent and what Weston represents. It erases some of the time and misery I spent in the South Pacific fighting the Japanese. Thank you all so much.”

Lt. Governor Bysiewicz said, “we thank you for standing up and fighting tyranny and authoritarianism, and winning.”
